Our SP Phase at Wembley College consists of the four classes: Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6 and Grade 7, often referred to as the Form 1 class. The Form 1 name is to link in with the High School Form 2 to Form 6 classes, which follow the Cambridge Syllabus.
We have close to 80 scholars: 23 in Grade 4, 24 in Grade 5, 17 in Grade 6 and 18 in Form 1. We have one main or register teacher in each class. Mrs Hurd is our Grade 4 teacher and has been at Wembley for 8 years and this is her 6th year with Grade 4. She teaches all the main subjects for Grade 4 except Computers and Library. Mrs Wessels is the Grade 5 teacher and this is her 2nd year with this grade. She also teaches most of the subjects except Computers, Library, Science and Music. Mrs Hurd takes the Grade 5 music.
In Grade 6 we have Mrs Scott, who has been involved with the library since the foundation of Wembley, twelve years ago, and is currently in her 8th year as the Grade teacher. Mrs van Rooyen is in her 7th year with the Form 1 class. Mrs Scott teaches the Zulu, Afrikaans and Art in these grades as well as Science in Grade 5 and 6 and she is the Library teacher of the whole SP Phase. Mrs van Rooyen takes the English, Maths and Music for these two classes.
In our phase we emphasise on teaching an hour of maths and an hour of main language each day as we are convinced that numeracy and literacy continue to be the most important academic skills that our scholars need to be equipped with.
Every year all our pupils get the opportunity to write the National Conquesta Olympiads in six subjects which are of a good standard.
As from 2010 we are now registered as a CPP School. This means we follow an international curriculum in English, Maths and Science. We are currently doing online training to familiarize ourselves with all the aspects of Cambridge, and that we know how to make full use of the online facilities which is a great advantage of this program.
As soon as
we feel the pupils have prepared for the external progression test at the end of Grade 6 we will enroll them.
Our Form 1 pupils start the Checkpoint syllabus which is a 2 year preparation system for the IGCSE which is taken at the end of Form 4.
On the cultural side we participate annually in the National Speech and Drama Association for all the individual and class categories.
Every second year we stage a concert with the focus that literally each scholar has a roll to play and words to recite. Our concert title in 2006 was ‘Update Earth’. This theme focused on the update of global warming of our earth and the direct changes that involve us. We also have a responsibility to look after our earth and as a result the children are inspired to recycle cans. In 2008 we performed RATZ - an altered localized version of the Pied Piper of Hamlet. This year we plan to stage Volcanoes.
Leadership in the SP Phase under the guidance of Mrs Scott is a unique situation in that each and every Form 1 scholar is a monitor for two terms and a library monitor for two terms. The monitor duties are linked to assisting with taking care of other scholars in our phase as well as the JP phase. The library monitor duties are organizing different aspects in the library during one break per day.
The Form 1s are also responsible for organizing four social functions a year. This includes choosing a theme, advertising, budgeting, music, organizing food etc. We pride ourselves in the success of these functions as our attendance is close to 100%.
Even though we are a small school, we offer all the main sporting activities, involving a very high percentage of our scholars participating.
The beauty of Wembley’s existence in the country has direct positive influences on our scholars
- Firstly, each class has a tranquil, scenic view which must be seen to be appreciated.
- We have enormous, safe, open playgrounds where the children love to play.
- The scholars are free from city stress, pressure and peak hour traffic.
- Many of our children are from a farming background contributing to scholars spending a lot of their free time in nature.
- We are only one hour’s drive from Pietermaritzburg which means we can participate in all sporting and educational activities.
A unique aspect of our school and our phase, where we know we really make a difference, is in the emotional well being of each and every scholar. We have small classes where individual scholar’s emotional needs and desires are taken care of. We can only enhance good learning and academic development when emotional and social foundations are solid.
