Academic Approach: Cambridge Syllabus

UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL EXAMINATIONS

University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), the world's largest provider of international qualifications for 14 – 19 year olds, provides assessment in over 150 countries through a wide network of Centres. Cambridge qualifications are known worldwide for the excellent education they deliver in preparing students for the next stages of their academic or vocational careers. The Cambridge syllabuses are continuoully reviewed and updated to maintain these high standards in order to stay at the forefront of educational development.

We at Wembley College are proud to be part of this network of approximately 6000 Cambridge Centres throughout the world and are convinced that this system has proven itself to produce successful, goal-orientated individuals as is evident in the achievements of our past scholars.

At Wembley College our pupils achieve two qualifications, namely International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and Higher International General Certificate of Secondary Education (HIGCSE), which will be replaced by the Advanced Subsidiary Level (AS Level) from 2010.

The IGCSE is a two year course with examinations being written at the end of Form 4 (Grade 10), and the AS course (replacing the HIGCSEs) is also a two-year course which will be written at the end of Form 6 (Grade 12)

The Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Level represents the first half of a full A level course (one of the most recognized and desirable qualifications around the world) and the AS syllabus is a natural progression from the IGCSE syllabus which is currently examined at the end of our Form 4 year. Our pupils will prepare for their AS examinations in Form 5 and 6 thus enabling them to study a broader range of subjects without committing to doing a full A Level. Our pupils will sit their AS examinations in the October / November of their matric year.

THE ADVANTAGES OF THE CAMBRIDGE SYSTEM ARE:
  • Cambridge qualifications are recognised by universities and employers worldwide. In South Africa, Cambridge qualifications are accredited by the universities via the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and Higher Education South Africa (HESA).
  • The qualifications offered at Wembley College enable our pupils to achieve very high M-Scores (provided that they pass) enabling them to study at institutions of their choice.
  • The external examinations are based on syllabuses produced by the University of Cambridge International Examinations in England. The Cambridge syllabuses are continuously reviewed and updated to maintain high standards and to stay at the forefront of educational development.
  • Our teachers are provided with excellent support material, the examinations marked internationally and results measured worldwide.
  • The teachers at Wembley find the IGCSE & HIGCSE Cambridge syllabuses interesting to teach, relevant and up-to-date and are looking forward to the introduction of the AS Level courses in 2010.
  • The Cambridge system offers flexibility as scholars are not faced with a once-off examination, but achieve their matriculation qualification in two sessions (Grade 10 and Grade 12).
  • The Cambridge system is an Outcomes Based Education system and pupils are exposed to a great deal of application work.
  • The development of oral as well as practical skills is encouraged.
  • The Cambridge system accommodates superior as well as average scholars.

We at Wembley College firmly believe that the Cambridge qualifications we offer provide a strong foundation for Higher Education and widen the horizons of our Wembley Scholars.
